The Quickening

The Quickening is a new artwork by O’Mahony. Developed over three years, this work gathers voices describing the reality of farming life and the centrality of soil to human, animal and insect life. The film emerged from “Sustainment Experiments” feasts, which generated discussions between farmers, scientists and politicians. Transcribed, they have become a libretto for the work, developed by O’Mahony and writer Joanna Walsh. It is voiced and accompanied by singers and musicians Branwen Kavanagh, Michelle Doyle, Siobhán Kavanagh, Ultan O’ Brien and Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin.

The Quickening was commissioned by The Douglas Hyde Gallery of Contemporary Art and supported by The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and The Douglas Hyde.
